Starting as a simple concept to connect the
citizens of McHenry County with the extensive
bike trail system and the wonderful amenities of
the Conservation District’s many natural areas,
the first event of 2003 consisted of a modest
bike ride that started and ended in Glacial
Park. There were three rides to select from: a
10k and 20K trail ride and a 50K roadway
option. It since has evolved into both a bike
ride, with the same three trail options, and a
canoe trip down the Nippersink, a Grade A stream
that winds along six miles of open prairie and
woodlands in northern McHenry County.
With help from McHenry County Conservation
District staff, paddlers are able to enjoy a
gentle glide down the Nippersink, and the
convenience of a shuttle ride to and from their
vehicles and assistance in and out of the stream
with their canoes. Dozens of volunteers help
each year to make this event safe and enjoyable
for participants of all ages. After the ride
and/or paddle, family and friends can relax and
enjoy a home cooked pasta lunch while listening
to some live music.
Since the first annual event, participation has
doubled each year, demonstrating the popularity
of the event. |
